Class ll certified balances are required for weighing jewelry, precious metals, gold, platinum etc. gemstones etc.

These Balances have special technical descriptions on their nameplate i.e a Model 6202R 6200g d=0.01 e=0.1g where the d represents the displayed value - but cannot be used for a value to price goods on and an e value to which is the legal value that commercial tranactions are based and are sealed form calibration- simple.

The problem with using Class II balances in retail enviroments is that the calibration must be carried out for place of use due to the effect on the altitude above sea level in which it takes the balance out of calibration, but as all approved balaces are factory sealed some balances have the internal motorised calibration which automatically re calibrates the scales throughout the year that require no maintenance.

The complication for maufacturers is that when the law was introduced in 1985 - when no digital class II approved trade balances were availaible, so no one thought they would be used in retail enviroments.
