Load Cells for vessel weighing

Load cell weighing offers more flexibily when insatlled in vessels, hoppers, feed bins or structures that cannot accomodate a platform and because of the small footprint reduces floor space normally occupied by platform scales.

The load cells on these pages come complete with the appropriate mounting hardware, as this ensures the weight transfer to the weigh cell is achieved correctly, some of which have overlaod and restraining mechanisms already buit in.

Load cells use strain guage technology, and energised by a DC power supply, which regulates the voltage to the cell compensating for temperature and voltage drop. The cells can be up to 12 dependant on he structure, but more often 3 are used, these are connected via a special load cell junction box that balances the signal output ready fr the instrumentation to read the signal typically in microvolts per division.

A single load cell as used in a platform is usually re calibrated, using weights and is a simple process, however multi load cells 3/4 are connected to a single junction box with a summing circuit, this allows each of the load cells to be trimmed  due to the load being unevenly distrubuted by the vessel.

When this has been completed the signal is then the same as a single platform as far as the instrument is concerned

We use OIML standard in all our scales, because they can usually be a like for like direct replacement a the Mv/v output is matched requiring minimal adjustment to the junction box / calibration when compared to non approved load cells where the mv/v output may be different on each cell.

In some cases they may require good load cells to be changed in order to get the calibration correct, these load cells are usually lower cost in the short term but may turn out out more expensive when a breakdown occurs.

Signal conditioners versus Weight indicator - Due to the very very  small signal some process applications may use simple analogue converters typically used as a level device, however the analogue to digital conversion (A/D), is generally on 1 part in 2000, compared to a basic indicator which is 1:30000. Weight indicators are manufactured to extremely high specifications (OIML) and some have smart software able to calibrate at about 10% of load, automatic zero tracking and can be programmed to remember the last load in the vessel in event of power failure. In view of the importance of vessel weighing in process enviroments and to minimise downtime we reccomend weight displays on all vessel applications.

4 Wire / 6 Wire Load Cell connections - Load cells can have 4 or 6 wire load cells, the extra wires are  used to regulate the power supply, to compensate for voltage drop and  temperature variations on the distance between the instrument and junction boxes.
